Johan commenced his career in IT as a programmer with Delfos and Atlas Copco. He later joined the Marine and Trade Insurance Company where he worked with Arnold Garber. During the course of 1975, he joined ICL as a systems engineer supporting fully integrated on-line systems within the motor industry. Whilst still involved in the motor industry he was twice sent abroad for training sessions, once with BMW in Germany and once with Kerridge Computer Company based in the United Kingdom. During this same period, Johan began attending a system design and development course at the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business. Johan joined Compu-Clearing group in 1985.
